Great Falls Symphony Sponsors Municipal Band July 18

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 18, for the Great Falls Municipal Band concert at the band shell in Gibson Park. The Great Falls Symphony Association is sponsoring this evening of outdoor music.

Bring lawn chairs and refreshments, and sit back and enjoy music with friends under the direction of guest conductors Dusty Molyneaux and the Great Falls Symphony's Music Director, Grant Harville. The concert starts at 7:00 pm, but come early to get a good spot.

Now celebrating their 124th consecutive season, the band performs each Wednesday during the summer, weather permitting. This season they will perform through August 15.

Seasoned Band Director, Bud Nicholls, says, "The [Municipal Band] is a treasure to Great Falls," and the Great Falls Symphony Association agrees. Many musicians, staff, and members of the Board of Directors of the Great Falls Symphony perform with and support the Municipal Band every summer. "I love it when I am able to perform clarinet in the Municipal Band. It's like a family reunion," says the Great Falls Symphony's Executive Director, Hillary Shepherd. Hillary worked as the Municipal Band's music librarian and performed with the band throughout middle and high school. "I remember sorting through piles of charts every week during the summer in the late 1990's. At that time, the charts were housed in an upstairs room of E & B Music. There wasn't any air conditioning up there, so it was a character-building experience for me to work as librarian," Hillary adds. "I also learned a lot of valuable things about music during those years. Specifically, which keys each instrument played in and which parts could be used to substitute or augment other parts when necessary. I also learned how to sight-read really well."

The band plays a mix of marches, show tunes, patriotic music, new, and old favorites. There is something for everyone.

“It’s fun to meet people from all walks of life, and music is what brings us together,” says Linda Nicholls, who plays percussion with the Municipal Band.
