Ruth Gipps

ADDITIONAL TIDBITS

Pietro Mascagni

Intermezzo from Cavallieria Rusticana

4 MINUTES

Tragic and deeply romantic, Mascagni had initially tossed it into the trash. His wife retrieved it and convinced him to finish it. The world is ever grateful.

Franz Josef Haydn

Cello Concerto in C Major

MOVEMENT 1

9 MINUTES

This concerto was lost for nearly two centuries until its rediscovery in 1961. With radiant atmosphere, it’s considered one of the greatest works for cello of all time. Haydn’s bravura writing and brilliant runs challenged Baroque conventions and require demanding virtuoso playing by our featured cellist Jayla Mitchell.

Ruth Gipps

Ambarvalia

8 MINUTES

A prodigy, Gipps composed her first work at age 8, and received her doctorate at 26. This lovely piece was written in memory of a longtime friend, who Gipps once described as her “musical twin.” First recorded in 2019, this may be the North American premiere.

Jacques Ibert

Concertino da Camera

MOVEMENTS 2 & 3

8 MINUTES

The saxophone came of age as a jazz voice in the 1920s. Ibert, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Gershwin took note and incorporated jazz influences into their classical compositions. Guest artist Antonio Jarvey will interpret the lyrical beauty and technical wizardry (flutter tonguing!) of this concertino for alto sax.

Erich Korngold

Much Ado About Nothing Suite

8 MINUTES

Another child prodigy, Korngold was already a veteran theater composer at age 20. His melodies, imaginative tone color, and harmonic lushness would later make him early Hollywood’s leading soundtrack composer.
